Sherlock Holmes *spoiler alert

film, 2 months ago.

Guy Ritchie came back in style for Christmas.  I’ve always been a fan. Witty dialogue exchanges, amazing action sequences and a magnificent story. I was excited to see this classic character interpreted in film. Rather than the regular boring  know-it –all detective; we are graced with a more cynical and jaded side of the English icon.

The dynamics between Robert Downey Jr. & Jude Law were entertaining, even as a standalone element. I don’t think there is anything else that needs to be said.

It induced a pile of laughs, gasps and eyebrow raises, and was the perfect way to wrap up the wonderful year of films 2009 had to offer.

Yay!

Avatar *spoiler alert

animation, film, 2 months ago.

Avatar was great. I loved watching it, and felt like I easily got my monies worth.

However:

I thought it was a beautiful film to look at, but the story was corny. Throw 300 million dollars at a film, and it’ll look like the coolest thing on earth. Hinge it on a predictable plotline and poor character design; and it detracts.  Even though the establishment of a really unique and believable world, the story sitting on top was just too vanilla. Every character is a weak archetype of expected roles, and each played out very one dimensional and completely predictable paths.

A great film to watch for the technical achievements, but I do think it’s being propped up by its budget.

Everybody I’ve talked to thinks that I am being too harsh, but I do think it hides a lot of its flaws behind the technology. I think we will look back on it in 5 years, and see this technology being utilized as a standard. Will it stand the test of time and remain a hit after the initial shock wears off?  I doubt it.

What’s amazing is where it will take film in the future. It’s pioneering some really unique techniques and new options which have never been explored before.

Hey, be aware of Rachel’s birthday. It’s a serious issue.

Transition

adventures, 3 months ago.

Things have been really crazy lately. It’s been hard to say anything because of the scale of the situation. There are some messy details, but for now they are just for the people who need to know right now (you know who you are).

To everyone else; I’ve had a wonderful time working & living in Vancouver, BC, but something unexpected blew everything out of the water. It’s unfortunate that it’s something that can’t be repaired; but I think it’s something that consequentially opens up some new doors.

I’m going to Portland, OR very soon, and I hope to arrive upon some wonderful opportunities. My greatest friends are down there. They are the most supportive and kind people I’ve ever met. Christmas is best with family & friends. I hope I meet plenty more wonderful people. If you are around, let’s work on being real good friends.

I really want to say thank you to everyone. All of my friends.  You’ve all been so supportive, and I hope I can give it back to you by doing & making great things for everyone.
